The newly reopened Hong Kong Maritime Museum explores East Asia’s inextricable link to the water, putting Hong Kong’s maritime story into context regionally and internationally.
The museum officially reopened in February 2014 on Central Ferry Pier 8 in the heart of Victoria Harbor. During the refurbishment, the museum decided to put a map of Hong Kong on a part of the floor. The map is made in carpets from ege and the colours are mainly bluish fitting the theme of the museum.
On the main floor large panoramic windows, with view directly over the stunning harbour, are framed by a figurehead above and the reproduction of the map on the carpet from ege below.
Palmer & Turner architects from Hong Kong were in charge of the interior design of the museum and they chose the ege design team to provide the carpet. Viewing previous ege concepts online, the architects were convinced that ege was the right business partner for providing them with a tailor-made flooring solution.
Inspiration came from Hong Kong history. Hong Kong was originally a tiny fishing village which became an international trading hub and one of the major centers for maritime transportation.
The designer came up with the idea of the map of Hong Kong Harbour which is now dividing the city in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon sides.
Upon visiting the museum Signe Cheung Tørsleff noticed the visitors commenting on the carpet while walking across the floor.
“As the visitors walked through the museum they pointed at the carpet illustrating the sea chart and talked about what they saw on it. They didn’t just walk on the carpet – they had an additional experience from the expression of the carpet. Not only does the carpet have an entertaining value – it also contains an informative value,” says Signe Cheung Tørsleff.
The carpet design emphasizes the whole theme and message of the importance of shipping to Hong Kong well, and it makes a footprint on the floor showing visitors how Hong Kong looks on a map.
